Many of you know that I volunteer at the Greenhouse – a Christian Community Enrichment Center located in the Gardenland/Northgate neighborhood of Sacramento, California. The Center offers after-school tutoring, mentoring, summer day camps, a youth group for teens, leadership development, and skill-building workshops. I help the kids there with math and answer lots of computer questions but I also conduct a photography workshop. I teach the kids the basic skills of taking photos and then we go out take pictures and create a slideshows and books of the their work. Many of the kids participate and they really enjoy taking photos.

This year we’d like to take the workshop to another level and create a photography program. The program is called Exposure and the objective is not only to expose the kids of the Greenhouse to photography but to expose them to experiences that may foster a greater interest in the arts. We plan field trips to the Crocker, Second Saturday, and trips specifically for taking photos. We’ll also have guest speakers so if you’re a photographer, you can expect a call from me. We would like to get the program started in late March and we need your help.

We need your digital point-n-shoot cameras that you don’t use any more. Doesn’t matter if you not sure if it works or not. We need it. If you have a camera that you can donate, contact me. I’ll come pick it up! If you’re out of town, drop it in the mail to me and I’ll reimburse you for the postage. So go through the drawers and closets of your house and find those old cameras. Thank you in advance for your help.

So I think Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and it's not just for the food. However, you can't beat deep fried turkey, twice baked potatoes, sweet potato casserole (it's really a dessert), an artichoke casserole and of course a southern tradition pecan pie. But what I like most is that it's a time to thank God for all that he has given to us. We are truly blessed with an abundance of riches and the greatest gift is my family and the tradition of Thanksgiving bring us together.

We have another tradition on Thanksgiving and that is to take a family picture. Easy right? Cuz I'm a professional photographer and all but problem is that I'm supposed to be in the picture instead of behind the camera. So we try and try and try... and the grand kids get restless and the adults get irritated cuz the kids get restless. But we do it anyway cuz it's a tradition...

Dining with the Divas (Part 2 of 3)

OK, so that was Friday night... Saturday we were invited to join the Poswall's (Peg and John) for a 4th of July Celebration at their house north of Newcastle where they have 50 acres almost all of which has been beautifully landscaped. Anyway, Peg Tomlinson-Poswall is also one of the Dining Divas and cooks and entertains at their lovely home on a weekly basis.

For most of the day, we sat around the pool and laid on the sofas on the second level deck visiting and munching on a few snacks but when it came time to get serious about dinner, Peg disappeared into the kitchen where she began organizing an outstanding spread. About 3 hours before meal time, Peg put the ribs in the oven on about 225 for some slow cooking. The were pre-seasoned with a savory rub and served with droplettes (smaller than a drop) of Peg's special balsamic vinegar. Then came the vegetables... gazpacho was served before the meal and served with the main course were heirloom tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, corn on the cob, and Italian potato salad complements of Dani Luzatti (friend and neighbor) who was also at the get together. We also had beets and pasta salad prepared by Jackie (one of Peg's neighbors) that was as good a pasta salad as I've eaten.

In addition to the great food, Tracy, the resident wine expert was there to make sure the pairings were perfect.... as did John. After dinner, we all went up to the tower and watched the fireworks show presented by John and Zabi. Most lasted well into the night up in the tower under a full moon. Others sneaked off to dream land.... guess which one I chose :-)

Dining with the Divas (Part 1 of 3)

This is the first of a three part post of a most unbelievable weekend of good friends and phenomenal food. Mary and I had the good fortune to get invited to dinner on Friday and then an overnight invite on Saturday and Sunday. These were no ordinary invites I might add. We were invited to dinner by 3 of the Dining Divas from Sacramento.

Friday night we went to the newly remodeled home of Joan Lieneke. The kitchen was fabulous and Joan was gracious enough to give us the grand tour and talk about each cooking station and its features. Very, very impressive. The anchor of the kitchen was the wood burning oven in which almost the entire meal was cooked. We started with pizza appetizers that Joan put together at the baking station. We then moved to the table for a raw salmon kibbe that was to die for... The main course was oven baked quail and broccoli with gnocchi prepared by the 2nd of the 3 Dining Divas, Paulette Bruce.

The quail was baked to perfection, the broccoli had a smoky flavor and the gnocchi was rich and creamy. We were also fortunate enough to have a wonderful bottle of BV Private Reserve that was 23 years old (provided by Jim and Debbie). For dessert, fresh fruit cup that was perfect after such a wonderful meal. Thanks Joan and Jake for having us over and Joan and Paulette for a perfect night out. Check out some of the photos...

Some of you may know that I've been rebranding my photography business. Well, the project is complete and my new website is up. I've also changed the name from Photo128 (long story about the name) to Terry Daffin Photography (shorter story that make sense). Check it out and let me know what you think. Also, on my last site, I had music. This site does not. What is your preference?

Diamond in the Dunes

On Sunday, I was invited to preview a documentary film, Diamond in the Dunes, directed by Chris Rufo who is part of the Documentary Foundation here in Sacramento. The film is about Parhat Ablat, a young Muslim minority from the deserts of Western China, who leads the fight against racial segregation through baseball. The 10 minute preview had me wanting more of the story not only because I love baseball but because of the passion for which these people embrace the game and what their only game of the season against a team of Tibetans from the Qinghai Province means.

The story documents the struggles between two ethnic groups in the Xinjiang Province that band together to learn the game of baseball and for the chance to play in one game a year. The two groups live in almost total seperation speaking different languages, praciticing different religions, live and work in different neighborhoods and even set their watches two hours apart from on another.

It's a story about breaking the lines of segregation through baseball.... sound familiar?

Walk and Rock for the Kids... and Journey

What an event! Hope Productions, created to provide resources to support youth and children’s charities throughout the U.S., held an inagural event here in Sacramento Saturday, May 23rd. It began with a walk around midtown Sacramento that started at Raley Field, down Capital to the Capitol, up 10th St. to K St., throiugh the Downtown Mall then back to Raley Field. With bands stationed along the route and one at The Hard Rock Cafe, over 1,000 walkers showed up to support the cause of seven charities in their inagural year. They raised over $850,000. The charities that benefited were:

The Cross

This a repost from the Veneration of the Cross service from last year... Still very moving

The service begins with the celebration of the Eucharist and then a huge cross is brought into the church where it is passed over the crowd where everyone has the opportunity to touch the cross symbolic of what Christ had to do as he carried His cross to Golgotha. After which the cross is laid on the floor of the church and people have the opportunity to step up to the cross, kneel, pray, and lay hands on the cross out of respect again to what Christ did for all in His death and resurrection. If you have never attended such a service, you are missing one of the most moving and emotional services of the season. Hope to see you at St. Francis next year on Good Friday. Halleluiah! He has risen!

Dinner with Ty

OK, I know it's been a long time since my last blog entry but I've been facebooking (now a verb) a lot and posting photos and videos.

So anyway, it's been a couple of weeks or so but Mary and I had the pleasure of dining with the Kubicek's (Matt, Laurie and Ty). We had a great time visiting, the wine was excellent and the dinner fabulous. Thank you Matt and Laurie very much. And that Ty Kubicek... well, it's hard to describe what a pleasant young man he is. Anyone that knows the Kubicek's and Ty knows what I'm talking about but is hard to describe. He's free thinking, imaginitive, intuitive, bright, funny and can have meaningful dialog with adults.... and he's only 5 years. And that's the coolest thing about Ty is that he's 5 and plays in the backyard with big trucks, has a dog, and eats spaghetti like a kid should eat spaghetti...

Thanks Ty for having us over. Can't wait to do it again...

As I contemplate the busy holiday weekend, I can't help but think how blessed I am. We live in a country where we live freely to go, do, live, think, say, be, what ever and where ever we want. I don't know if many other countries have as many freedoms as we do here. And in reflecting on that, my hope is that because of all the freedoms God has given to me, that I am able to give to others and glorify God while I do it...

This one of my favorite recipes... It's simple and really good. My buddy Craig help me film the cooking... I think he came over cuz he was hungry. My Brother is in Trouble

Back at the end of July Mary and I were in Las Vegas for Chris Webber's fund raising event Bada Bling which my wife, Mary and her business partner, Wendy of Nouvelle Roux designed and produced. I was there shooting for the event and I was exhausted afterward. So much so, that I went on a little trip to the Grand Canyon with my brother, Tim and his two girls, Emma and Katie.

We stayed in Williams, AZ. and drove north to visit the GC but while we were in Williams, the girls wanted me to do a photo shoot with them (my brother did too). So we went into old town Williams as the sun was setting and had some fun. And with very little direction, these girls knew what to do.... My brother is in big trouble.... Check 'em out!

Full Circle Dance Company

So for those of you that don't know, this summer I followed the Full Circle Dance Company from Step One Dance Studio and took pictures during their practices that lead up to August 1st and 2nd performances at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Theatre in Sacramento. The show was called Emotions and it was awesome! So I took a little over 7,500 pictures over a four month period and now I'm putting together a book for them to document the experience. It was totally fun to be around the ladies and watch the energy, enthusiasm, spirit and passion they have for dance. And I have to tell you, I was totally in awe of what I saw them do between the long hours of practice to the choregraphy to the promotion of their event, these ladies are professionals.

Football is in the Air

If you've read the "Inside Info" on my website, you know that I've said that I think football is stupid even though I played the game in college. What I really meant was that at my age, it's silly to think you can still play. :-) But even so when I have an opportunity to get down on the field and close to the action, that's what happens... I want to put on the gear and get out there and bang some heads... see, isn't that silly.

I had the opportunity to go to Hornet Field, home of the Sacramento State Hornets to watch a scrimage. I was also at field level so I was able to get real close to the action. Then I stood next to some of the guys... they're a lot bigger than I remembered.

I happen to know the head coach, Marshall Sperbeck, so it's possible that I'll be able to go down to field level for the real thing and take some pictures. From what I saw on Saturday, it's much safer on the side lines... Check out some of the shots...

Elsa Letterseed and the NorCal Film Festival

Mary and I spent the day in Modesto yesterday at the NorCal Film Festival in support of a independent feature film Elsa Letterseed. Almost 6 years ago now, a good friend and writer/director, Sarah Kreutz asked Mary to read a part for the movie she was making. Mary got the part Casandra Sybil and the rest is history.

Elsa Letterseed is the story of a young violin prodigy who experiences a phenomenon, which renders her genius musical gifts useless. Unable to perform and provide income, her parents place her in a mental hospital for a brief stay. Years later, Elsa is now out on her own, struggling to survive. Without money or talent she must now forge her way through the intricate puzzle of her life, finding unexpected sources of support which help guide her through extraordinary events. Elsa's journey to regain her purpose brings together an intriguing cast of characters and mazes through a story of unexpected twists.

The film was very well recieved and won many of the awards it was nominated for including:

Bada Bling 2008 Time Lapse

One of the things I do at C. Webb's Bada Bling is create a time lapse video of the event. I started on Wednesday night prior to the event and ended on Sunday morning after the strike. Actually, it ended a little shy of the complete strike... one of the strikers moved the camera so I was taking pictures of the corner of the room for a while. In any case, here's what happend during the 5 days the camera was taking pictures from set-up, rehearsals, the event, and the strike. Enjoy!

Saturday Night Salsa Dancing

OK. So Mary and I had a very busy weekend... major trip to Home Depot for lighting, Sacramento Rivercats Baseball, Dinner on Sunday with some really good friends in Granite Bay, but the highlight of the weekend was Saturday night. Bobby and Wendy Fresques invited us to a Court Party in their neighborhood. What a great turn out. There were 80 to 100 neighbors and friends and plenty food and drink. They even had a Latin Jazz band that ROCKED!! the neighborhood. As it started to cool down and folks were feeling a little less inhibited, a little salsa dancing broke out and started to liven things up a bit. But I think the best of the night goes to the Fresques Girls who were dancing in the street till the wee hours... talk about shakin' it up... Check out the slideshow...

Wedding in the Woods

I shot a wedding this past weekend in Glenbrook, NV on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. What a beautiful venue for a wedding. The wedding ceremony was at St. John's in the Wilderness Episcopal Church and the reception was adjacent to the church at Camp Galilee. The groom was the brother of a really good friend of mine whose wedding I shot 2 years ago so I already knew many of the family members is attendance. The bride was a little nervous (to be expected) but gracefully composed as she entered the church and walked to the alter where there was a huge window overlooking the Lake Tahoe. After the wedding ceremony, toasts, and dinner, we all went down to the lake for a walk on the beach. Check out the slideshow....

New Babys Everywhere

Is there something in the water? Seems like I've been photographing a lot of newborns. But that's good cuz I like babies... other people's babies... cuz I can give them back.... Just kidding. I really do enjoy the moms and dads coming to my studio for portraits of their new additions. This past week I had 3 sessions and all three were big, stapping, healthy boys. New Baby Josephine

Mary and I had an opportunity to vist some friends of ours, Valerie and Brent, and meet Baby Josephine. She is 8 days old and very, very pretty. She was also a very good model for these shots which I took in between bites of pizza. Mom and dad are doing great adjusting to their new life. Not getting much sleep as is the case but non the less doing great. I don't think anything compares to the birth of a child. What a miracle!

Attended a Wedding....

I was an attendee of a wedding this weekend at the Presidio Chapel in San Francisco and brought my camera just to take some candids. I brought my fastest lens which is my Canon 85mm f/1.2 cuz I didn't want to be obnoxious with my on camera flash. And besides, the photographer the bride and groom hired for the wedding had a flash and I didn't want to mess up her flow.... Anyway, I love shooting with this lens cuz I can stay a good distance away from the action while getting some great close-up shots with just a little light. The bride was a classic beauty so I decided to go with some B&W Lightroom Presets in my post edit. Most of these shots were taken wide open at f/1.2 and between 1/30th and 1/40th of a sec. A Day in the Park

I spent last Sunday in the park with a senior... no, not my grandmother. A high school senior, Allie. She wanted to take senic photos so we went to a park near my house I call The Oaks cuz, well there are plenty of oak trees... duh! And the wild flowers in this park were also blooming. Beautiful! And I'm not just talking about the wild flowers. Check out some of the pics...

Blog Neglect and WPPI

OK, OK... so I haven't updated my blog in a while.... like the whole month of February. I'm not very good at this blogging thing but I will try. As a matter of fact I will go back in time and update you on stuff I did in February (I was very busy).

But first I wanted to tell you about my trip to WPPI. It was great. I wasn't able to go for the business part but the open programs and trade show were awesome! Speaking of awesome check out our room for the trip. It was enormous! And the view was amazing. The trade show was crazy. There had to be a million vendors. Canon had by far the largest presence. Their booth was a block long. The had speakers every day (including Dennis Reggie) and were doing live shoots. They all their toys out too... including the 1Ds Mark III and the 1D Mark III... almost bought the 1D :-)... Anyway, check out the pics and come back soon. I'll have more posts.

Carpe Diem, Carpe Vino

So if you're gonna go out and have a great meal, why wouldn't you have great wine as well... and share it with great friends. That's what we did last Saturday night. We went to Carpe Vino located in Old Town Auburn. Well worth the 40 minute trip up the hill from Sacramento. We also had the opportunity to eat a private dining area known as the Cave. Two of the walls were brick and part of the original building built in 1855 and the other two walls were the side of the hill it built against. The rock was sticking out of the side of the hill with small ledges for the candles that lit the room for a perfect ambiance to the evening. What a wonderful dining experience. You might even meet some new friends like we did. We introduced our selves to Lisa and Alicia who were there having some wine, waiting for their table. We found out that they've bee friends since the second grade. If you enjoy good food and good wine you need to check this place out. I know we'll be going back. Breaking Bread

As many of you know, one of our favorite things to do is entertain. I believe sharing a meal is one of the most sincerest forms of friendship that people can do for one another. Over the holidays Mary and I had a few friends over and broke bread. I also had some fun with my remote timer and brand new 85 mm 1.2. What a sweet lens. The first few pictures were taken with the new lens and no flash with little more than candle light. The last picture was one in a series that I was taking with my remote timer and my 16-35 mm 2.8. I chose this one cuz I thought it was cool how 8 people were having 3 separate conversations.

Guest list includes Wendy (Mary's business partner) and Bobby, Stacy and Scott (I photographed their wedding in July '07), Jen and Michael (I will be photographing their new one due to arrive late Feb. '08) and Mary and myself.

A great time was had by all.

Wow! It seems like forever since I last blogged (and it has) but the holidays were crazy as I'm sure yours were. However my wife (Mary) and I were able to sneak away to Lake Tahoe on Christmas Day believe it or not. It was a beautiful day! We really never made it to Tahoe but we did make it as far as the snow. We got out and walked around a bit and enjoyed the day. My hope is that you all were able to find a little peace during your holiday season. Oh yeah, The black thing in the picture is my lab Pearl. She had a great time as well although she wasn't sure whether to walk or swim in the snow. Happy New Year and hope to see you soon.

Run to Feed the Hungry

Happy Thanksgiving! It is usually the Daffin family tradition to run (or I should say walk) in the annual Run to Feed the Hungry race on Thanksgiving morning. This year was the 14th annual and what a turn out. Unofficial numbers were around 22,ooo participants. Officials hope to raise $500,000 in this year's event. The race originated in 1994 and was started by Gaylord Walker in conjunction with the Sacramento Food Bank. The inaugrual event had 800 participants. The race is a great success and shows the generosity of those that are thankful for what they have and are willing to share with those less fortunate. If you live in the Sacramento area, you should plan on running (or walking) next year. Hope to see you in 2008!

Mild Trashing

This past Sunday I took photos of my daughter and a friend of her's who wanted to trash their high school prom dresses. What I found out later was that they really didn't want to ruin them, they just wanted to take some fun pictures in them. It's all a matter of perspective... I think these two are getting ready for something much bigger. I'm in touble....

Tyler and Bryce at the Pumpkin Patch

I brought my grandsons to the pumpkin patch this week to pick up a few pumpkins. There was a corn maze and hay pyramid and a zillion pumpkins. I think we got some good ones this year :-)

Lierra and Eli

In addition to the Harvest Carnival (below) I also had a photo shoot with Lierra and Eli. We went to a park near their house and let them run and play while I chased and shot. It was a beautiful afternoon which made for some beautiful photos. Check 'em out.

The Greenhouse Harvest Carnival

This past Saturday I had a an opportunity to take some photos for The Greenhouse in Sacramento. What great fun! The Harvest Carnival is put on every year the weekend before Holloween for the families in the area. Lots of activities for the everyone.... face painting, jump house, cake walk, pumkin bowling, and of course pumpkin carving. Another great event... Thanks Kacie, Rose and all that volunteered for this year's event!

Trash the Dress in Linclon, CA

I had the opportunity to shoot a TTD session with a bride of 2 years. She said she saw a photographer shoot a session like this on the news and thought "Hey, that looks like fun". And it was. We started near a railroad tunnel. After a little gardening, she needed to cool off in the pool. Check it out!
